Yet Ganon is surprisingly getting less focus than anothericonicThe Legend of Zeldavillain, the terrifying enemy known as the ReDeads. A ReDead is only briefly shown in the trailer during its early moments. A voice is heard saying, “Rise. Rise, my servants!” followed by red projectiles falling from the moon. These meteorite-like objects fall to the earth, revealing themselves to be enemy creatures and one of them is a masked ReDead.

By no means are ReDead’s an uncommon enemy inThe Legend of Zeldafranchise. Since theirfirst appearance inThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, they’ve shown up in several other games, includingMajora’s Mask,The Wind Waker, andTri-Force Heroes. They were not, however, inBreath of the Wild, meaning this is the first time the ReDead have appeared in the modern era ofThe Legend of Zelda.

What makes the ReDead stand out is just how memorable their appearance inThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Timewas. ManyZeldafans fell victim to the slow-moving zombies, taken by surprise by its quick attacks. Nintendo’s ability to create a frightening atmosphere certainly helped add to its notoriety. When players see a ReDead, they expect a frightening, challenging foe.

One other interesting aspect of the ReDead is that they’re often found in dark rooms and dungeons. PerhapsThe Legend of Zeldafans are hoping that meansTears of the Kingdomwill have more secret areas to explorecompared toBreath of the Wild. Of course, withTears of the Kingdom’s moon creating a dark, foggy overworld perhaps ReDead will simply be wandering around casually. There are many mysteries yet to be unraveled regarding the newZeldagame, but it’s undeniably made Hyrule a more frightening place by reintroducing the ReDead.
