Summary
AWorld of Warcraft Classic Hardcoreplayer won a Duel to the Death using a cleverly-timed level-up in the middle of the fight. Though manyWorld of Warcraftplayers might consider this to be an underhanded tactic, none can deny that the strategy was effective.
Recently,World of Warcraftlaunched its official Hardcore realms for itsClassic Eraservers. These one-life worlds have had an absolutely brutal first weekend, withnearly 100,000World of Warcraftplayers dyingin the first 24 hours. While many of these deaths were to the various denizens of Azeroth, some were to their fellow players viaClassic Hardcore’s Duel to the Death mechanic, also called Mak’Gora.

World of Warcraftcontent creator Ziqo shared a video of his first Mak’Gora victory on hisClassicWoWMageagainst a Warlock. He was able to defeat the Warlock’s demon pet by Polymorphing his opponent, but he quickly found himself in dire straits with dangerously low HP and mana. Luckily, he had a secret weapon: Ziqo was only a few experience points away from leveling, and the duel took place right near an NPC with a quest ready to turn in. He leveled up mid-fight, fully replenishing his HP and mana, allowing him to seize victory from the jaws of defeat.
WhiledesigningHardcore Classic,World of Warcraftprobably didn’t expect players to use strategies like Ziqo did during Duels to the Death. Setting up this circumstance isn’t easy, as it requires players to start a duel near a finished quest NPC while also being close to a level up. Even so, because it could be considered unfair, it would not be surprising ifWorld of Warcraftimplemented some sort of fix to ensure this strategy could not be used in the future.
Either way, Ziqo’s fellowWorld of Warcraftfans got a kick out of this clever strategy, with the video receiving over 25,000 views in only a couple of days. Many players were blown away by his big-brained strategy, and said they would absolutely use it if they ever decided to risk theirHardcore Classic characters in a Mak’Goraof their own.
Other players were less charmed by Ziqo’s dirty trick, and said they would be furious if they were on the receiving end of such a strategy. That said,Garrosh Hellscream’s Mak’Goras inWorld of Warcraftloreagainst Cairne Bloodhoof and later Thrall often spark debates over if one of the participants cheated, so in a way, underhanded strategies are a time-honored tradition when it comes to these Duels to the Death.
