Over the past few years, Konami has shown little interest in traditional game development, having left its major franchises likeMetal Gear SolidandSilent Hillmostly dormant. However, rumors have been swirling thatSilent Hillis set to make a big comeback, with original director Keiichiro Toyama at the helm.
Toyama has been at Sony’s Japan Studio for nearly 20 years, working on projects likeSirenand theGravity Rushseries. According to the rumors, theSilent Hillgame is being developed as a collaboration between Sony’s Japan Studio and Konami. However, Toyama recently announced his departure from Sony, casting doubt in the legitimacy of the rumors.

But if Toyama has indeed been working on theSilent HillPS5 game as rumored, then his departure could potentially reveal a lot about the project. Fans should keep in mind that theSilent Hillgame has not been announced in any official capacity, and they should take any rumors about it with a massive grain of salt.

Development Timeline
If theSilent HillPS5 reboot is being directed by Keiichiro Toyamaas rumored, his departure from Sony’s Japan Studio could either be really good news for fans of the franchise or really bad news. One possibility is that this means theSilent HillPS5 reboot is nearing the end of its development cycle, and that could be the reason why Toyama has left to form his own studio. On the other hand, it could mean that Toyama decided to leave the project because of creative differences or other development troubles. Ultimately, without more substantial information to go on, all fans can do is speculate.
While it would be odd for a game director to leave a project just prior to its launch, it’s not unheard of for developers to leave projects to work on something else when their duties have been fulfilled. Usually this happens with writers, but who’s to say it can’t happen with people filling other roles. Then again, many developers who previously worked with Toyama on games likeGravity RushandThe Last Guardianhave also jumped ship to Bokeh Game Studios, so that may not necessarily bode well for the rumoredSilent HillPS5 game. However, all we have to go one are rumors and supposed “leaks,” and while these rumors have come from reliable sources, they still can’t be taken as gospel.

In the meantime, fans have noticed that, based on concept art,Toyama’s Bokeh Game Studioseems to be working on something similar to theSilent Hillfranchise anyway, so perhaps he will be finishing development on the game with his new studio.
Essentially, Toyama’s departure could either be a sign that theSilent HillPS5 reboot is basically done with development, or it could be an indication that it’s still a ways away. The official reveal will likely give fans a much better idea of when they can expect the game, assuming it exists at all.
Rumors Were Wrong
And that’s the thing, theSilent HillPS5 reboot may not even be real. While it has been leaked by people who have accurately leaked games in the past, it’s always possible that it doesn’t even exist, and so fans should keep that in mind. It’s also possible that the rumors were correct in saying that aSilent HillPS5 reboot is in development, but certain other details are inaccurate or plans have changed over the course of development.

There are some conflicting rumors about theSilent HillPS5 reboot that fans should keep in mind. While some of the more persistent rumors, and the ones that come from more reliable sources, have said that Toyama was directing the game, other rumors have saidHideo Kojima is helming the project. Considering Kojima’s messy departure from Konami, it would be very surprising if he were to be collaborating with the company on a newSilent Hillgame, but stranger things have happened.
Hideo Kojima is supposedly developing a horror game, so maybe that has led to some confusion that he is working on aSilent Hillgame. Again, with virtually no official information about the project, much of this boils down to fan speculation, but hopefully fans will have a bit more to go on later this week.
Tune in to The Game Awards 2020
Many of the rumors surrounding theSilent HillPS5 reboot have said that the game is going to be revealed at some point this year. The latest claim is thatThe Game Awards 2020 will see the long-awaited reveal of theSilent HillPS5 reboot, but the game was rumored for other gaming events this year, only for it to be a no-show. If the game does exist and Sony is still planning on a 2020 reveal, then The Game Awards on December 10 seem like the last real opportunity for it to do so.
TheSilent HillPS5 rebootmay or may not be at The Game Awards 2020, but the show will have other big gaming announcements regardless, so fans should try to tune in on December 10 just in case. If the long-rumored game is revealed, then hopefully it gives fans a much better idea of which rumors were true, and what Toyama’s departure really means for the project.
