The Last of Us: Part 2was given anextended gameplay demo at E3 2018that showed off a section of its single player story. However, some fans may be wondering if the sequel will have multiplayer, and while we’re not sure if it will be like what was seen in the original game, we can confirm that multiplayer is indeed coming back in some capacity.

This is according to Polygon, who spoke withThe Last of Us: Part 2co-director Anthony Newman at E3 2018. Newman didn’t reveal any details about what the multiplayer component inThe Last of Us: Part 2will entail, only saying that Naughty Dog will reveal details about it at a later date.

When that date may be is up in the air. Despite some rumors indicating thatThe Last of Us: Part 2would launch in 2018, the game did not receive a release date announcement at E3, meaning it likely won’t be out until 2019 at the earliest. This means that there are still a few big gaming events between now andThe Last of Us: Part 2’s release date that Sony could utilize to reveal more about the game’s multiplayer.

One possibility is that fans will learn Last of Us: Part 2’s multiplayer in December. December is typically when Sony hosts its PlayStation Experience event, where it offers deeper looks at its upcoming games, and it’s reasonable to expect that we’ll see more ofThe Last of Us: Part 2at this year’s show. It’s also possible thatThe Last of Us: Part 2will make an appearance at The Game Awards as well, which also takes place in December.

Depending on how far outThe Last of Us: Part 2is from its release date, we may not see its multiplayer until next year’s E3 event. It’s possible Sony plans on havingThe Last of Us: Part 2as its big holiday 2019 release, and if so, it’s likely that the game will have a major presence at E3 2019.

When we do get details aboutThe Last of Us: Part 2’s multiplayer, it will be interesting to see if it delivers an experience similar to that of the first game, or if it goes another route entirely. Fans will just have to wait for Naughty Dog to be ready to share more information.
