Next week, the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is coming to the digital version ofMinecraft: Wii U Editionand the best part is that it is absolutely free.

On May 17, thoseMinecraftfans who are owners of the digital version of theMinecraft: Wii U Editionwill receive the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack as a free update, which includes themed skins, textures, music, and an entire pre-madeSuper Marioworld ready to explore. For anyone not sure what to do with these new resources, Nintendo has released a trailer that shows off just some of the possibilities.

Players can recreateSuper Mario Sunshine’sDelfino Plaza, erect towering statues of their favorite characters, or even tradeMinecraftinhabitants with familiar creatures from theSuper Marioseries. Those who want to mix and match might find that Dry Bones is the perfect companion to those pesky skeletons.

The more players explore, the more they will find that these two worlds are a natural fit. After all,Minecraftfeatures vast underground areas to explore, just likeSuper Mario. Of course, players who want to delve into the deep places of the world might forgo the digging or explosions and opt to travel by pipe, which is presumably safer than TNT.

Given what is being shown, it is a wonder that this collaboration took so long to take place. Wii U owners can attest that Nintendo was a tad late the party, having released a version for their console just last December. In fact, beforethe Wii U edition’s official announcement, many believed that itwouldn’t come to the console at all. Because of this, theSuper Marioupdate doubles as an incentive to buy this particular version, and a reward those who were patient enough to wait for it.

Now thatMariohas officially come to the world ofMinecraft, perhaps it is time to flip that. Last year, one of our own writers pitched the idea to seeMinecraft’s Steve brought intoSuper Smash Bros.as a fighter. It is easy to see how that could fit together well, seeing as all Steve does is build things, blow them up, or fight. EvenMinecraftcreator Markus “Notch” Perssonthinks it would be “neat.”

Anyone with the incredible patience to wait for the retail version ofMinecraft: Wii U Editioncan pick it when it is released next month. It is priced the same as the digital version, at $29.99, and will include the Super Mario Mash-Up pack.

The digital version ofMinecraft:Wii U Editionis out now, while the physical iteration is set to release on August 16, 2025 for, of course, Wii U.
