Summary
In the high-tech world of Bethesda’sStarfield, the Old West-styled Freestar Rangers stand out as somewhat of an oddity. What sets them apart fromStarfield’s other factionsisn’t just the antiquated stylings of their outfits, but also their dedication to looking out for the common person. Serving as both the police force and fiercest protectors of the libertarian-led Freestar Collective, the Freestar Rangers keep the peace in the wildest reaches of known space. With their dedication to duty and doing what’s right, Starfield’s Freestar Rangers carry on the legacy of the founder of their faction.
Based out of theFreestar Collective capital of Akila City, the Freestar Rangers stand guard over the star systems of Cheyenne, Volii, and Narion. What they lack in terms of firepower when compared to the forces of their former rivals, the United Colonies, they make up for with a revolutionary spirit and an unrelenting desire to do what’s right. Though their folksy mannerisms and style of speech may lead players to assume they’re little more than intergalactic good old boys, those who end up on the wrong side of the Freestar Rangers will find themselves facing off with some ofStarfield’s fiercest fighters.

Starfield’s Freestar Rangers Carry On the Revolutionary Spirit of Solomon Coe
The Freestar Rangers have carried on the legacy of their faction’s founder by protecting the citizens of the Freestar Collective for generations. Founded long before the start ofStarfieldby Solomon Coe, explorer and ancestor ofConstellation companion Sam Coe, the Freestar Collective’s freedom-minded spirit of independence has often put them at odds with the more militaristic United Colonies. While the two groups enjoy an uneasy peace by the timeStarfield’s story begins, previous conflicts between the pair left a trail of destruction across the stars.
The Freestar Collective and UC first came to blows in the late 22nd century when a dispute arose over control of the planet Narion. Although the two parties eventually reached a ceasefire, this peace was shattered less than a century later. In the early 2300s, just decades before the start of the game, the rival factions faced off once again inStarfield’s devastating Colony Wars. The Freestar Collective ultimately prevailed in the end, securing sovereignty for its citizens in the process. Now at peace once more, the Freestar Rangers have switched from fighting the forces of the UC to protecting the powerless in Freestar space.

The Freestar Rangers’ Fight for Freedom Sets Them Apart from Other Starfield Factions
Unlike their biggest rivals in the cosmos, old enemies the UC and the space pirates ofStarfield’s Crimson Fleet, the Freestar Rangers appear to be genuinely dedicated to fighting for the greater good. This helps set them apart from the game’s other factions, who often seem to be motivated solely by self-interest. When traveling through the trio of star systems under their control, it’s not uncommon for players to come across the fearsome fighters of the Freestar Rangers engaged in deep-space dogfights with the Crimson Fleet pirates and murderous Spacers that prey on unsuspecting travelers.
Despite their high-minded motivations, though, the forces of the Freestar Rangers don’t hesitate to dispense hard justice to those who run afoul of them or the citizens they protect. Players who decide to join up with the faction will see this first-hand as they assist the Freestar Rangers in dealing with problems both big and small. Whether that means thwarting a bank robbery or getting to the bottom of a corporate conspiracy inStarfield’sThe Hammer Falls quest, the Freestar Rangers have no qualms with players taking on the role of judge, jury, and executioner.
Although they may come across as little more than space cowboy cliches at first glance, the Freestar Rangers prove to be one of the game’s most fascinating factions. With a look and style all their own and motivations that are arguably more altruistic than those of their cosmic neighbors, these sworn protectors of the Freestar Collective help make the skies ofStarfieldjust a little safer.
