Summary
In a series of announcements, Embracer Group has hinted that gamers shouldn’t expect to get their hands on the upcomingStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicremake this year. BioWare’s classic action RPG released back in 2003, but it’s still remembered fondly by fans.Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republicwas part of what many gamers refer to as the developer’s “golden age,” and more than a few players have been eager to see it updated for modern consoles.
Fortunately for these fans, aKOTORremake was announced to be in the works at developer Aspyr back in 2021. Since then, however, there has been a lot of bad news and concern surrounding the project. There were rumors that Sony, which was partnering on the development, had pulled support, and it was later announced that Aspyr was being taken off the project and the game was being given to developer Saber instead. Whileinsiders asserted thatKOTORwas still happeninglate last year, there was plenty of cause for pessimism. Now, it seems, there is even more reason to be worried about the remake.

Reporting byVGCindicates that theKOTORremake, while still in the works, definitely shouldn’t be expected within the next year. During a conference call, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors responded to a question about whether the game could be expected within the next 12 months with a firm negative. “No, I think that kind of game needs some deep love and respect,” Wingefors stated, concluding that “I think it’s some time left until that is released.”
KOTOR Remake Development Plagued by Problems
This revelation comes on the heels of recent news thatEmbracer is sellingKOTORdeveloper Saber. While no longer owning the developer, Embracer still retains a stake in theKOTORremake itself, so statements from the company’s CEO should be a reliable indication of the current state of the project. This news is likely to disappoint fans but, given the recent upheaval of Saber and the history of the project, it’s not exactly surprising.
The development of theKOTORremake has certainly been a long and frustrating road for observers. The original title often tops the list ofamazingStar Warsgames, and many fans would argue that it deserves a remake more than anything else. For it to struggle for so long in development is both sad and shocking, given the success it would likely see at launch.
Theoutlook forKOTORin 2024was already negative, and this latest news definitely confirms those feelings. The project is certainly still alive, but not likely to be seen any time soon.
