Of all the ways to describeSkyrim, the words “noir” and “hard-boiled” would probably not crop up in most conversations, but one fan decided to rectify this by turning the Bethesda title into a black and white detective show. Of course, there are somefantastic noir and noir-inspired gamesout there, such asL.A. Noire,Max Payne, andGrim Fandangoto name a few, but most are satisfied thatThe Elder Scrolls 5remains steadfast in the fantasy genre.

One thing that’s appealing to many is thenumber of ways fans can play throughSkyrim, whether it’s being a stealthy character, putting more efforts into strength, or choosing to become skilled in magic. Then there’s the modding community, which has seen to it that there are even more ways for players to make a name for themselves in this cold slice of Tamriel. For many, role-playing is a key factor in getting the most out ofTES5, and one person decided to take this to a new level.

In a recent post on Reddit, user CanKikiPlayToo has uploaded a brief clip from aSkyrimdetective show they’ve been working on, which they call “Skyrim Noir.” As the name suggests, the series takes cues from old films, possibly ones inspired by the work of Humphrey Bogart or Edward G. Robinson. This fan-made series follows Detective Tinkles, a Scottish-voiced Khajiit who’s embroiled in the goings-on in the province. This particular clip follows them as they are tasked with seeking out a female Redguard in Whiterun who’s wanted by outsiders. The short episode plays out like a movie from the 40s, complete with brooding narration and lounge piano music.

Pretty much anyone who’s played the game will recognize this mission, known officially as “In My Time of Need,” in which the Dragonborn is indeed hired by two men to look for a Redguard woman hiding in the city. It may not be themost memorable side quest inSkyrim, but it’s almost certainly one that most players will come across, especially early on, as it can be triggered pretty much as soon as Whiterun is entered.

In any case, what CanKikiPlayToo has created, although it’s been a few months since the most recent episode, is certainly a way to keepSkyrimentertaining. Withno word on whenThe Elder Scrolls 6will be coming out, fans are keeping themselves busy inTES5and the previous entries in the long-running franchise. WhetherTES6will inspire such creativity remains to be seen at this stage.

Skyrimis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
