One observantDestiny 2player has discovered that Weapon damage-boosting Armor Mods aren’t working as intended, leading to several scenarios of weapons being significantly weaker than planned.Destiny 2has a long and storied history with bugs and glitches, with the infamous Telesto Exotic Fusion Rifle having caused a significant portion of the problems. The myriad of issues plaguing the game sinceLightfall’s launch has been much direr than before, often leading toseveralDestiny 2weapons, armor, and Mods being disabledin tandem.
Destiny 2’sLightfallexpansion has introduced several changesto the game to refresh the experience and bring a sense of challenge back to the game. One such change was Bungie’s decision to remove the one-dimensional Elemental Burn system and replace it with a splintered Surge-Threat-Overcharge mechanic. In this new system, players and enemies take 25% increased damage from sources matching the Elemental Surge, and players no longer suffer the 50% increased damage taken penalty. Additionally, a select weapon class is Overcharged in high-end activities, allowing that weapon type to deal 25% increased damage regardless of Elemental Surge.

A Reddit user named StealthMonkey27 has posted their results of testing the Weapon Surge Mods with active Elemental Surge and Overcharge modifiers and discovering that several combinations do not work as intended. According to StealthMonkey27’s batch of six tests, attempting to use an Overcharged Weapon matching the Elemental Surge, in conjunction with three Elemental Weapon Surge Mods, will result in the weapon losing the 22% damage bonus from the Armor Mods. The player explains that the Armor Mod damage boost does stack properly with any single source of activity modifier, andDestiny 2players should avoid matching Overcharged Energy weapons with the Surging Element.
StealthMonkey27 provides further details into how Kinetic weapons avoid this issue altogether and even gain the 10% damage boost against unshielded combatants. The player speculates that Kinetic weapons and related Mods are unaffected by Elemental Surges, which conversely don’t conflict with the Overcharge modifier. The sentiment is shared by several players who have noted how the Osteo Striga Exotic Kinetic SMG has outperformed nearly every single Primary weapon inLightfall. Other players have expressed theirconcerns overDestiny 2’s current state, seeing how these malfunctioning modifiers may have caused a good portion of the player base to be underperforming without their knowledge.
While this bug can be circumvented by equipping a different weapon or changing the Element type, it stands as further proof for those who have been critical of the developers over thelack of quality control inDestiny 2: Lightfall. Players can only hope that the developers are listening and working on fixing these issues as soon as possible.
Destiny 2is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
