There has been growing unrest surrounding theSea of Thievesfan base practically since the game launched, and things came to a head this week whenone player hit Pirate Legend status. For those unfamiliar, Pirate Legend was what Rare touted as its true endgame. According to the developer, hitting rank 50 with all three trading company would unlock a secret area, new voyages, and much more.
Unfortunately, that “much more” and even those new voyages left a lot to be desired. AsSea of Thievesplayers watched streamer Prod1gyx hit Pirate Legend, find the secret hideout, check out the new cosmetics, and head off on his first legendary voyage, there was a collective sigh of, “That’s it?”

Even as players voiced frustrations overSea of Thieves’ launch week server issues, reward redemption, and perceived lack of content, true fans held out hope that Pirate Legend status would offer something more. Rare had touted the achievement as the pathway towards new cosmetics, customization options, and even more gameplay. But as it turns out, the Pirate Legend unlocks are seemingly the same as what is on offer in the main game.
It makes sense then that theSea of Thievescommunity is frustrated. Over on Reddit, there are several threads where players are voicing their disappointment and trying to find some hope in it all. Admittedly, we don’t know if what Prod1gyX uncovered is all that Pirate Legend status has to offer, but regardless, a voyage that is more of the same is not what players were hoping for.
Frustration over Pirate Legend has also spun into anger at Prod1gyX for not truly “earning” his pirate legend status. In an effort to get to the achievement first, Prod1gyX had fans helping him rank up fast, and so some feel his claim to Pirate Legend carries an asterisk. Either way, the posts with #NotMyPirateLegend feel more like misplaced frustration (or even anger) overSea of Thieves’ developer not delivering on expectations.
Of course,Rare plans to support the gamefor a long time after release, and hopefully once things quiet down – there are still plenty of issues on the to-do list – the devs can address plans for the future. They are going to have to do something soon because many fans are growing restless.
Sea of Thievesis available now for PC and Xbox One.
