InPokemon SwordandShield, trainers encounter both new additions and iconic elements of the series. While exploring the Galar region and progressing the plot, trainers will catch many Pokemon in their pursuit to be the very best. To that end, Generation 8 offers players familiar ways to enhance their Pokemon through TMs/HMs, held items, and stat-boosting vitamins. Additionally, the Galar region brings further choices in the form of new regional variants, new evolution methods, and other customization options. But for trainers looking to raise the best-of-the-best, they will need to check and raise Pokemon with the best IVs.

IVs are the hidden stats in Pokemon that directly determine how high the six primary stats can go: HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. Having the best IVs for a specific Pokemon means that it can reach the highest potential stats of its kind. For example, if an Eevee with the highest speed IV was trained for max speed, it would out-speed any other Eevee. However, inPokemon SwordandShield, trainers can only check IVs once the main story is cleared.

Unlocking the IV Judge

The ability to judge IVs is locked until the player has beaten the Pokemon League. After becoming champion, trainers will need to do some post-game content includingcatching their version-specific legendary. Once this is completed, the Battle Tower will open in Wyndon. Starting at Rank 1, trainers have to battle their way up through single or double-battles, culminating in a final fight against the former champion, Leon, before they reach Rank 4, Poke Ball tier.

Checking IVs

After reaching Rank 4, the IV judge is unlocked and can be used to check a Pokemon’s IVs anytime. To check IVs, first go into the Pokemon Box and select a Pokemon. Afterwards, press the + button twice: once to View Stats and again to Judge them. The Pokemon’s stats will be rated with one of six different statements depending on how it can affect its stats.

In the end, trainers looking to min-max will want their Pokemon to have the best rating in as many stats as possible or even perfect IVs. Note that trainers canacquire a Gigantamax Eevee or Pikachu with perfect IVs if they have a save file fromPokemon: Let’s Go.
