Summary

Overwatch 2Season 7 debuted a few weeks ago with a surprisingDiablo 4collaboration alongside a new Control map called Samoa. Though there have been various changes and additions this season such asthe Sombra rework, adding a new hero to the roster was not one of them. Of course, this makes sense since last season saw the introduction of Illari, and according to previous patterns, a new hero should launch at the same time as Season 8.

Season 8 ofOverwatch 2is expected to begin in early December. While there was speculation that the unreleased hero would be a DPS, Blizzard confirmed in a tweet from September 28 that a tank would be divulged at BlizzCon 2023. With a good portion of the fan base eager to see one particular hero,Overwatch 2may need to be careful with how it proceeds.

Overwatch 2’s Mauga Should Be Hero #39

Tank players haven’t gotten a new character sinceRamattra came out in Season 2which means the next season could be incredibly important for them. Several people believe the unrevealed character will be Mauga, a former member of Talon and a friend of Baptiste. Prior to Ramattra, the community thought Mauga would be announced at the Overwatch League Grand Finals in 2022.

Fortunately, it seems Mauga has a better chance this time around sinceSamoa, the latest map to make its way toOverwatch 2, is hiding an Easter egg related to him. Inside a beach shack, a red Hawaiian shirt that the burly man has been depicted wearing before can be seen hanging on a hook. The clothing article is massive, which may indicate that the person who dons it is built like a tank character. Based on previous art of Mauga and Baptiste, he certainly looks like he will be a large character.

Interestingly, Blizzard has trolled its audiences in the past. After over a year of anticipation, whenplayers were expecting Doomfist to debutas the 24th character in the hero-shooter, the developer gave them Orisa instead. Thankfully, Doomfist ended up being the 25th hero just a few months later, which made for a fun surprise. If Mauga isn’t slated for a debut after Ramattra took the spotlight in Season 2, his eventual inauguration may not be well-received.

Mauga was meant to be the 31st hero in the game, but development issues led to the birth of Sigma instead. In 2019, Blizzard confirmed that it would still be working on making Mauga playable. SinceOverwatch 2came out over a year ago, the tank role has only gotten Junker Queen and Ramattra, whereas the Support role has seen three additions. As such, any tank addition will be welcomed at this point, but fans have been waiting long enough for Mauga. WithBlizzCon 2023rapidly approaching, Team 4 has the opportunity to do another bait-and-switch, though it should avoid it. After promising that Mauga would one day be added, and then dropping a blatantly obvious teaser with Samoa, it would be a mistake to troll the fan base.

Whether Blizzard will pull another Doomfist-style fake-out on November 3 is still to be determined. After all, there are several other known tank-like characters that could join the FPS, such asany of D.Va’s MEKA co-pilots. Fortunately, the events from BlizzCon 2023 will be live-streamed on Twitch and YouTube, so players that can’t physically be at the convention won’t need to worry about missing any details.

Overwatch 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
