In an age where anything goes, mangaka Nekotofu has come out with a hilarious take on the transgender experience withONIMAI: I’m Now Your Sister! This gender-bending themedAnimebrings a humorous light to a serious issue of gender identity, and thanks to the director Shingo Fujii, viewers will be getting an Anime adaptation of Mahiro and Mihari Oyama’s antics. Thankfully, there are already five tankōbon volumes of content to work through with a sixth on the way, which were originally self-published in 2017.
In the officialONIMAI: I’m Now Your Sister!trailer, released on April 22, viewers get a glimpse of what to expect from thiscomically hilarious anime series. The scene opens with Mahiro Oyama, first thing in the morning, stumbling out of bed to discover the adorably feminine body he now possesses. After a quick assessment, Mahiro is interrupted by his sister, Mihari, who shows no surprise at her brother’s new physique. She reveals that the transformation is thanks to a new trial drug, to which Mahiro had involuntarily become a guinea pig for testing its success. Once he stops taking the medicine, Mahiro will (theoretically) become a male again; however, he seems intrigued at the idea of taking his new girly persona out for a test drive.

It seems appalling that Mihari would spike her brother with such an intensely life-changing drug, and this could have all been a terribly inappropriate practical joke. However, she claims that her intentions were pure, as she could see Mahiro falling into bad habits that suggested thatdepression has taken overthe boy’s life. Mahiro apparently has been a recluse for the past two years, isolating himself within his home with little to no social interaction. Mihari believed that a drastic change was in order, to force her brother’s hand in changing up his lifestyle. Luckily for Mahiro, his newfound womanhood is elegantly easy on the eyes, which is sure to inspire confidence and the desire for new adventures (that don’t involve MMORPG…)
Fans of the Manga have labeledONIMAI: I’m Now Your Sister!as “Unintentionally Queer”, due to the ease at which Mahiro “unwillingly” transitioned into a woman. Generally speaking, if a cis male suddenly woke up as a girl, there would surely be a bit more internal debate and slight discomfort at the unexpected gender change. However, it takes Mahiro mere moments to accept his new female role, which somemembers of the LGBTQ+ communityfind suspicious.
It could be quite possible that Mahiro had already dabbled with the idea of making the transition himself in the past, which is why it was so effortless for him to ease into his femininity. Dealing with the internal struggle of possiblyopting for a gender reassignmentcould also be the reason behind Mahiro’s supposed depression, as it is undoubtedly not a simple decision to make, especially if there is a lack of support from the community. Mihari possibly picked up on her brother’s struggles, which is why she felt so sure of her decision to ‘help’ Mahiro out.
Be warned! TheONIMAI: I’m Now Your Sister!Manga content is very raunchy, so viewer discretion is advised for those who wish to take a sneak peek. The PG rating on the Anime adaptation is yet to be determined, but if the trailer is anything to go by, some form of light, sexual material is to be expected.
The official release date ofONIMAI: I’m Now Your Sister!is yet to be announced.
