Haki is an incredible power that only a handful of people in theOne Pieceworld awaken to. Although it seems like most people who appear in the New World have this ability, when compared to the number of people in theOne Pieceworld, only a small percentage seem to be able to use this power. Haki, being a spiritual ability, allows people to use their spirit in incredible ways in and out of battle. Usually, Haki is classified into two types, the first of which is Observation Haki, or the Color of Observation, which allows a user to sense a number of things from incoming attacks to people’s emotions.
The other type of Haki is called Armament Haki or Color of Arms Haki. This type of Haki allows a user to manifest their spirit as an invisible armor to attack or defend against any incoming threats with ease. Most importantly, ArmamentHaki allows a person to bypass any protection offered by a Devil Fruit, making them vulnerable once again. While Haki is a terrific ability to have, not everyone manages to awaken it and there certainly are reasons as to why that is.

The Ways To Awaken Haki
Haki is quite a complex power to awaken and throughout the series, there have been quite a few ways to get one’s hands around this ability. Some people are born with this power, such as Aisa of the Shandian race. According to Laki, she was able to use Mantra or simply put, Observation Haki, from a very young age despite never having any training for it. In fact, she could use this power on a very wide scale, going as far as to sensing every single life on Upper Yard itself. The likes of the Kuja are also possibly born with the power to use Haki. In all theOne Pieceworld, they’re the only ones implied to be specialists of this power. Even the regular citizens of the Kuja Tribe have awakened to Haki, which just goes to show that they’re special.
However, aside from the special cases, Haki can usually be awakened in two ways. The easiest way of awakening Haki is to train under a specialist of this ability. On several occasions, fans got to see people awaken Haki by training under those who have already mastered it to the fullest. Monkey D. Luffy trained under Silvers Rayleigh, the right-hand man of the Pirate King to awaken both Armament and Observation Haki. In one and a half years, Luffy gained a complete grasp over the basics of these two types of Haki, along with Conqueror’s Hakias well. Similarly, Roronoa Zoro had the World’s Strongest Swordsman, Dracule Mihawk, train him in the ways of Haki. Just like Luffy, he managed to learn Armament and Observation Haki very well over the two years.

The only other way to see this power awaken is when someone is in a life-or-death situation. Fans saw this withKoby, who managed to awaken to Observation Hakiafter the events of the Paramount War by seeing countless people die around him. Just like him, Sanji awakened both Observation and Armament Haki on his own on Momoiro Island simply because he was fighting for his life against the Newkama members.
InOne Piece Novel A, Portgas D. Ace, another avid user of Haki, awakened to Armament Haki on Sabaody Archipelago while fighting Vice-Admiral Draw. Most recently, Usopp, the sniper of the Straw Hat Pirates, tapped into Observation Haki when the fate of his captain and the entirety of Dressrosa relied on him.
Why Normal People Never Awaken It
Although Haki is accessible to everyone, most people don’t awaken it. As evident from the several instances observed,Haki can only be awakened in very rare cases. Unless a person belongs to a tribe that is a specialist of this ability, Haki needs special training or dangerous situations to awaken. Most people never get to train under Haki masters like Luffy and Zoro managed to do. For them, awakening Haki through this method is impossible. They can, however, awaken Haki when they’re in dangerous situations.

It must be noted, however, that just being in dangerous situations doesn’t guarantee the awakening of Haki. A person must push themselves to their limits otherwise new levels can never be found. According to Silvers Rayleigh,Haki is a power that truly blooms in the thick of battle. So, unless a person is willing to fight with everything they’ve got and throw their bodies on the line, awakening this power is quite difficult.
Most people don’t awaken Haki simply because they never find themselves in these special situations. The people who regularly find themselves in high-level combat are the ones who reside in the New World of theOne Pieceworld and, thus, they’re the ones who fans get to see use Haki the most. That’s not to say that Haki can’t be awakened. Under the right circumstances, anyone in the world can awaken this power, however, for most people, the dangerous situations needed to test their powers never arrive.
