Dragon’s Dogma 2was once one of the most anticipated games of 2024 and, for the most part, it has garnered positive feedback from the gaming community. Despite some initial controversy surrounding its microtransactions and poor optimization, it has overcome the odds and is generally viewed as an improvement on its predecessor’s formula. As it turns out, most of the microtransaction-related controversy was based on misinformation and its optimization problems have since been resolved. Despite its success in dealing with these issues,Dragon’s Dogma 2hasn’t been able to put the fire out of all of its controversies, especially when it comes to one of its most prominent features.
Dragon’s Dogma 2’s fast-travelsystem has proven to be one of its most divisive features, as it was intentionally designed to essentially force players to explore the game’s open world. Specifically, fast travel inDragon’s Dogma 2comes with weighty, unavoidable restrictions and almost always costs players a hefty price. As a result, a large chunk of the time anyone invests inDragon’s Dogma 2is spent walking from one location to another, since there are no mounts in the game. Unfortunately, this doesn’t bode well forDragon’s Dogma 2’s future if it has plans for DLC, as any DLC expansions could potentially only shine a brighter light on its restrictive fast travel and give further weight to the argument that opposes it.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 DLC Might Be Held Back By Fast-Travel Restrictions
Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Fast-Travel Restrictions Force Players to Walk
Dragon’s Dogma 2isn’t without a fast-travel system, as players cantravel between Portcrystals using Ferrystones. However, Ferrystones are very rare and expensive, so careless use of them is highly discouraged. Players can also fast-travel using the Oxcarts found in most of the game’s main cities, but Oxcart rides are often interrupted by monster attacks — just one of the many waysDragon’s Dogma 2punishes players for taking shortcuts.
This is all precisely what started theDragon’s Dogma 2microtransaction debacle, as many players outside looking in assumed Capcom was attempting to sell Ferrystones for real money. Of course, this turned out not to be the case, but that still hasn’t leftDragon’s Dogma 2’s fast-travel system exempt from criticism. Despite Capcom’s efforts to defend the game’s fast-travel restrictions ahead of its release, the system has still been a major source ofcontention forDragon’s Dogma 2. Capcom originally stated that there is no need for excessive fast travel as long as the open world is interesting.
However, many fans feel thatDragon’s Dogma 2’s open worldisn’t as varied as it should be to account for all the restrictions placed on fast travel. For example, one of the most common criticisms ofDragon’s Dogma 2’s open world is the lack of enemy variety in it, though its environments are arguably diverse enough. This makes slowly trudging across the game’s map all the more painful, and less rewarding than it probably should be.
Expanding the Map in Dragon’s Dogma 2 DLC Might Be Out of the Question
With so manyrestrictions placed on fast travel inDragon’s Dogma 2, expanding the map beyond its current borders in future DLC might be out of the question. If players learn that they need to walk even further to their destination, they might be less inclined to purchase DLC for the game. This is, of course, assumingDragon’s Dogma 2eventually receives a DLC expansion.
Capcom has been busy asking players what they’d like to see in potential DLC, so it’s likely going to happen. Still,Dragon’s Dogma 2’s notorious fast-travel system might make it difficult for any additions to the game to go anywhere worthy of note unless it either remains within the borders of the map or takes players somewhere entirely different.
