Now thatNightwolf will be addedtoMortal Kombat 11, many fighting game enthusiasts are back to play the well-received installment in the long-running series. While the game has been given much attention as of late over the film, the movie has seen multiple developments as well in recent months and has been confirmed to live up to its R rating.
Just months following thereveal of the characters to be featured in theMortal Kombatmovie, the film’s writer has discussed the film’s R rating. Specifically, writer Greg Russo discussed the degree to which the film will adhere to the R rating and the film’s ability to maintain the R rating while not crossing any boundaries.

Russo said in the interview that “in terms of the content, yeah. I mean we’re… I think there’s always a thin line, you know, you don’t want to be over the top, right?” He added that the violence in the movie shouldn’t reach the point of offensiveness. However, he did say, “So I would just say that it’s going to be faithful to the games, but yeah. And it’s going to earn it’s R rating, I guess I’ll say that.”
According to Russo’s statements, it can be derived that the movie will adhere closely to theMortal Kombatseries, which itself features copious amounts of violence and gore. Although, Russo does indicate that he does not want it to turn audiences away just in the name of shock value or some similar device often used to stir audience emotions.
It had been revealed before by Russo that theMortal Kombatfilm would be rated R and feature fatalities, though onlookers had still been unsure as to what the R rating and the fatalities would entail. Given Russo’s recent statements, it can be presumed that the thin line is currently being walked between offensive gratuitousness and underwhelming action sequences, much in the realm of howX-Menfans felt about Wolverine in the originalX-Menfilms. However, Russo has undoubtedly provided hope forMortal Kombatfans.
Currently, there is no scheduled release date for theMortal Kombatfilm. Although, it is known to be well into development.
Mortal Kombat 11is now out on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
