At theCall of Duty: Modern Warfaremultiplayer reveal event, developer Infinity Ward gave attendees a chance to go hands-on with a number of modes and maps from the upcoming AAA game. Additionally, the developer showed off its new Gunsmith system, which will allow players to customize their weapons in more ways than they ever have before.
As the name implies, Gunsmith takes a micro view of any weapon inCall of Duty: Modern Warfareand lets players select attachments that first their playstyle. From stocks to grips to scopes to barrels, there is a ton of choice in the Gunsmith system, to the point it’s overwhelming at first.
With a limit of 5 attachments per weapon, players will have to make some concessions but mostly they will focus on leaning into their engagements of choice. Every attachment in the Gunsmith system has some inherent “Pro” and many of them have “Cons” as well. For example, putting a light weight barrel on a gun will increase the ADS speed but at the cost of damage range and bullet velocity.
While it sometimes may be hard to determine what one attachment offers over another, the Gunsmith menu also shows how each add-on will influence Accuracy, Damage, Range, Fire Rate, Mobility, and Control. It’s another way forModern Warfareplayers to get a sense for how one attachment will influence the characteristics of a gun over another. Ultimately, though, testing it out will really determine the best Gunsmith setup, but unfortunately we didn’t have access to any sort of shooting range in our preview.
Being able to test out weapons is important because the cons can add up.Modern Warfareplayers will need to consider every attachment. Instead of simply slapping on the best attachments, there is going to be a trade-off associated with loading into multiplayer with a kitted out weapon. What we found in our experience playing the game is that it’s best to pick a few attachments that suit the gun instead of trying to balance Pros and Cons.
Gunsmith seems to be astep in the right direction forCall of Dutyand brings it closer to a system that emphasizes choice. In the past, players simply worked towards the same basic attachments, but inModern Warfarethere doesn’t seem to be any obvious builds that are vastly superior. That may change in time, but based on our time playing with Gunsmith it felt like we never even scratched the surface.
