A big part of the success thatHogwarts Legacyhas seen since its release can likely be attributed to an existingHarry Potterfanbase. Many people who picked upHogwarts Legacywere already fans of the wizarding world created by now-controversial author J.K. Rowling, and the ability to experience the magic of Hogwarts through a game was more than enough to draw attention. While the creatures, characters, and settings inHogwarts Legacydo a great job of playing on nostalgia, a few things seem to be missing.
Like most open-world games,Hogwarts Legacyrequires players to traverse long distances across a vast map to complete quests and level up. To make this easier, players can obtain andride a number of magical mounts inHogwarts Legacy. These mounts includeHarry Pottericons like Hippogriffs, Thestrals, and even a classic wizard’s broom, but there is one fan-favorite creature that is left out: the Unicorn.

Unicorns in Hogwarts Legacy
Unicorns are some of the most well-known mythological creatures in the world, and they do appear inHarry Potterbooks and films. These magical horse-like animals are not missing fromHogwarts Legacyeither, players can find Unicorns near Upper Hogsfieldand can catch them using a Nab-Sack. If players catch both a male and female Unicorn, they can even be bred like other beasts inHogwarts Legacy.
While most of the mounts inHogwarts Legacyare flying animals, there is one exception in theGraphorn mount that exclusively traverses on land. It wouldn’t be strange to have another non-flying mount in the form of a Unicorn with its own unique abilities that incentivize players to use it. In officialHarry Potteruniverse lore, Unicorns are said to be so fleet of hooves that the beasts can outrun a werewolf with great ease - this would be easy to implement by simply giving a Unicorn mount increased running speed.
Because of the speed of a Unicorn, they are unsurprisingly difficult to catch. However,Hogwarts Legacyalready has a quest that solves this issue. The Unique Unicorn questline inHogwarts Legacytasks players with finding and rehabilitating an injured Unicorn named Hazel. Once players locate Hazel at the request of Betty Bugbrooke, they can be caught and stored inside of one of the Vivariums. At that point, players can feed, brush, and even breed Hazel, but they can’t use this Unicorn as a mount. It seems like an odd choice by the development team given other similar quests eventually lead to mounts with similar naming conventions, including Highwing the Hippogriff, Sepulchria the Thestral, or Caligo the Hippogriff.
It’s unclear if Hazel the Unicorn was originally intended to be a mountable beast, or if this was just a missed opportunity behind the development ofHogwarts Legacy. Either way, some fans remain disappointed at their inability to ride a majestic Unicorn during their time at Hogwarts.Hogwarts Legacyis still receiving updates, and likely will get more going forward, so it’s still possible that Unicorns will join the roster of magical creatures that students can ride around the Scottish Highlands.
Hogwarts Legacyis available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, with PS4 and Xbox One versions launching May 5 and a Switch port releasing July 25.
