Fresh off of hosting theGamescom 2019 Opening Night Live presentation, Geoff Keighley has announced the date for The Game Awards 2019. As revealed by Keighley on Twitter, The Game Awards 2019 date is December 12. As usual, fans can expect The Game Awards to be streamed live online, and with it being the fifth anniversary of the show, Keighley has promised that it will be “very special.”
The Game Awards has become an increasingly popular awards show for gaming, with increasing viewership year after year. Not only do fans tune in to the event to see which games win which awards, but also to see its various world premieres. Similarly to events like E3 or Gamescom,The Game Awardsfeatures a number of surprise game announcements, ranging from new indie game reveals to blockbuster game announcements.

When it comes to The Game Awards 2018, there were a couple of big announcements that really caught peoples' attention. One was the confirmation that BioWare is making a newDragon Agegame, and the other was the official announcement ofMortal Kombat 11. The Game Awards 2018 also saw the surprise reveal ofMarvel Ultimate Alliance 3for the Switch, among a number of other reveals. So needless to say, expectations are high for The Game Awards 2019.
As for which games may be up for awards this year, there are a number of possibilities. At the time of this writing,Resident Evil 2is the highest-rated game of the year, with an impressive 92 average rating. Other highly-rated games includeDevil May Cry 5,Gears 5,Kingdom Hearts 3,Fire Emblem: Three Houses,Outer Wilds, andSekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
If we had to make a guess, it seems likely that eitherResident Evil 2orSekiro: Shadows Die Twiceare the most likely candidates for Game of the Year at this point. However, there are a number of major games that have yet to release yet that will also likely be a part of the GOTY conversation. Titles like theCall of Duty: Modern Warfarereboot and Hideo Kojima’sDeath Strandingspring to mind. However, sinceKeighley is inDeath Stranding, that does potentially create a conflict of interest.
