There has been some confusion surrounding the number of playable characters inGears 5’s story campaign. While it’s been reported in the past thatGears 5technically supports 3-player co-op in the campaign, it seems this detail has flown under the radar for many. However, the list ofGears 5achievements has been released today, confirming that there is in fact 3-player co-op for the campaign, with both the PC and Xbox One supporting 3-player split-screen.
There are multiple achievements forGears 5’s campaignthat have players do various things as Jack, the hovering robot that follows players around throughout the entireGears of Warseries. These achievements include attacking enemies with Jack’s abilities in the campaign and fully upgrading Jack, as well as completing an Act of the campaign playingasJack. Additionally, there is an achievement inGears 5called “It Takes Three To Make A Thing Go Right” that players can earn by completing an Act in 3-player co-op. Since a lot of the trailers we’ve seen for theGears 5campaign involves only two human characters, it seems that the third player will most likely be controlling Jack.

Now, it’s possible that the third player will occasionally play as a human character. After all,Gears 5features more than three playable human characters that will be featured over the course of its campaign. It’s also possible that the third player will always be controlling a third character and Jack will just be an option for anyone playing.
We haven’t been able to find clarification on the matter online, as it seems the fact thatGears 5supports a 3-player co-op campaign mode hasn’t generated much attention. Most articles we were able to find on the matter just mention the 3-player co-op campaign in passing, and none offer specifics as to who the third person will be playing as in the campaign.
When fans do get their hands onGears 5, it will be interesting to see how they react to the 3-player co-op experience, as opposed to the four player one that some may have been hoping for. The newEscape Modeis also limited to just three players, but other modes, like Horde and Versus, support more.
Gears 5launches on September 10 for PC and Xbox One.
