Summary

FromSoftware now has a rather extensive library of excellent action-RPGs, with itsDark Soulsseries,Bloodborne,Sekiro, andElden Ringall being regarded as some of the greatest games ever made, and the very best that the Soulslike genre has to offer. That being said, not all ofFromSoftware’s libraryis viewed equally, and there’s one black sheep that still stands out a decade later, though it’s one thatFlintlock: The Siege of Dawnisn’t afraid to reference.

Originally released in 2014,Dark Souls 2is still widely regarded as the weakest entry in FromSoftware’s recent library, with its floatier movement animations, overly difficult enemy attack patterns, and its bevy of mechanical and technical shortcomings. ButDark Souls 2is still an important cornerstone of the Soulslike genre, and it’s great to see its inspirations still reach new Soulslike titles likeFlintlock: The Siege of Dawn, which features a boss that might remind FromSoft fans of the Flexile Sentry.

How Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn’s Rammuha Compares to Dark Souls 2’s Flexile Sentry

Comparing Rammuha’s Visual Design to The Flexile Sentry’s

The first truly intimidating boss that players will face inFlintlock: The Siege of Dawn, Rammuha is one of the few gods that protagonist Nor Vanek accidentally unleashes onto the world at the start of the game. Possessing the minds of the rulers ofthe Three Peaks, Rammuha has a new army at her disposal, and after the player hacks and slashes their way through the city she’s hiding in, they’ll come face to face with the god herself. Rammuha is depicted as a tall, armored individual with no discernible facial features, with spikes jutting out from her helmet. Rammuha dual-wields swords, which appear as slender and pointed as her legs.

Fans ofDark Souls 2might experience a bit of deja vu when fightingFlintlock’s Rammuha boss, with her appearance bearing some strong similarities with the Flexile Sentry. Technically an optional boss,Dark Soul 2’s Flexile Sentry can be found at the end of No-Man’s Wharf on the bottom deck of an old ship. The Flexile Sentry is a conjoined humanoid, with one half dual-wielding scimitars, and the other dual-wielding spiked clubs. Much like Rammuha, the Flexile Sentry has a slender build, with disproportionately small legs.

Comparing Rammuha’s Moveset to The Flexile Sentry’s

While their visual designs are fairly similar, the real resemblance between Rammuha and the Flexile Sentry can be seen in their movesets.Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn’s Rammuhafrequently twists her body in an unnatural way during the boss fight, rotating her head and arms almost 360 degrees to strike at the player if they get behind her. These unnatural contortionist-like movements are seen a lot during Rammuha’s unblockable attacks, where she spins violently toward the player at high speeds.

Dark Souls 2’s Flexile Sentryboasts a very similar, unnerving moveset. Being two organisms fused together, the Flexile Sentry will often spin itself around so that its other half can attack the player with its alternate weapons. The Flexile Sentry’s moveset is also incredibly fast, with a few attacks launching a barrage of fast-paced swings and slices at the player that decimate their poise meter. The Flexile Sentry also has one or two spinning attacks of its own.
