Ravensburger unveiled the cards’ metallic foil forDisney Lorcana, the upcoming trading card game featuring popular Disney characters. With the announcement ofDisney Lorcana,Disneyenters the competitive market of trading card games alongside major franchises likeMagic: The GatheringandPokemon TCG.

Following the announcement of this new trading card game in August 2022, Disney unveiled thefirst batch ofDisney Lorcanacards during D23 Expo 2022, the biggest event for Disney fans. The first six cards revealed by the company feature new illustrations of Stitch, Elsa, Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, Robin Hood, and Captain Hook. Each card has unique powers and some flavor text, as well as various categories including Dreamborn, Hero, Queen, Sorcerer, Storyborn, Villain, Dragon, Pirate, and Captain. Disney and publisher Ravensburger haven’t yet revealed whether these categories will have an effect in-game, but more information should be revealed in the upcoming months.

Ravensburger designer Ryan Miller revealed the metallic foil treatment ofDisney Lorcanacardsduring GAMA Expo, a professional trade show of the tabletop games industry. The standard treatment forDisney Lorcanacards uses a “cold foil” style giving cards a metallic sheen with only certain parts of the card art foiled. Ryan Miller unveiled this metallic foil on four character cards starring Mickey Mouse, Frozen’s Elsa, The Lion King’s Scar, and Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, as well as two actions cards titled “The Beast is Mine!” and “Be Our Guest.”

Unlike other popular trading card games likeMagic: The Gathering,Disney Lorcanaaims to be family-friendlyand let all family members play together without a steep learning curve.Disney Lorcanatakes players to the Great Illuminary, the center of a magical realm called Lorcana. In this new world, players are Illumineers tasked to create glimmers of Disney characters to protect the lore of Lorcana against various threats. Illumineers can use up to six magical inks to summon glimmers of Disney characters, each granting glimmers different qualities and powers.

Thefirst set ofDisney Lorcanacards, titledDisney Lorcana: The First Chapter, will be released in hobby stores on August 18 before a mass-market retail launch on September 1. This set will include a total of 200 cards spread across three different starter decks, various booster packs, a gift set, and a collectible set called the Illumineer’s Trove. The secondDisney Lorcanaset, featuring a Tinker Bell “Tiny Tactician” card, will arrive on November 17 in hobby stores with a mass-market retail launch on December 1.
