Bungie has now revealed the big seasonal weapon that’s going to headlineDestiny 2’s Season 20. The Season of Defiance, as it is officially known, is themed primarily after the Awoken and their Techenun witches, and it’s seemingly going to take place mostly on Earth, where the Darkness-wielding Cabal have set up for a new war campaign against the Last City.
While the newDestiny 2: LightfallViDocprovided heaps of new information about the expansion itself, as well as some helpful context about the Season of Defiance, Bungie had even more information to share later on. Though the developer is still keeping many cards close to its chest, fans now have a substantially better idea of what to expect from both theLightfallDLC and Season 20 itself.

According to the latestDestiny 2TWAB, one of the most important weapons of the Season of Defiance will be the Ecliptic Distaff. This Awoken-themed Void Glaive is going to come with two all-new perks, too: Replenishing Aegis and Destabilizing Rounds. While the mere names of these perks do suggest their functionality, Bungie hasn’t provided any further insight on that front. Much as was the case with all the previous seasonal ritual weapons inDestiny 2, players will also have a chance to unlock special activity-themed ornaments for the weapon after unlocking it.
It may be worth highlighting the fact that the Season of Seraph featured aLegendary variant ofDestiny 2’s Revision Zeroas a ritual pulse rifle. Some may have expected Season 20 to take a similar approach, with the ritual being a mass-produced variant of some exciting new Exotic armament. That, however, is unlikely to be the case this time around, as there’s a different heavy Exotic glaive coming alongside theLightfallDLC, and it doesn’t share any geometry or functionality with the Ecliptic Distaff. It is equally unlikely that Bungie would launch two all-new Exotic glaives, to boot.
Bungie has already shared the names ofDestiny 2’s Seasons 20 and 21, interestingly enough. Whereas much is already known about Season 20, the Season of Defiance, the same cannot be said about Season 21, the official title of which will be “Season of the Deep.” The game’s lore has repeatedly equated the Deep with some form of Darkness, however, and it’s the sort of verbiage that the Hive Worm Gods often use in their monologues, which may suggest what it’s going to be about.
Fans are alreadypreparing forDestiny 2: Lightfall, as the major expansion pack is due to launch on February 28. It’s notable that Bungie has been substantially more forthcoming with information as of late, with the past couple of weeks featuring a glut of reveals on what’s to come in 2023. Whether that’s the new precedent or just a one-off anomaly is anyone’s guess, at this point.
Destiny 2is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
