The NPD is a market research group that tracks physical and some digital video game sales on a monthly basis. NPD has been providing sales data for over 50 years in various industries, and for 25 years in video games. There was a time when NPD used to release sales numbers and more details publicly, but in recent years they it has been keeping that information private.

It’s not entirely shocking thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfareis the most sought after title of the year, but it is impressive that its happened after only a month of time in the wild. Granted the hype was high and the reviews were mostly solid for this year’sCall of Dutytitle, a franchise that has historically broken NPD records. According to NPD’s VG industry analyst, Mat Piscatella the series is the best-selling franchise in the US since NPD started tracking games sales.
The biggest surprise forOctober video game saleswas the success of Obsidians' RPGThe Outer Worlds. The game ran itsFallouthype train all the way to number two on the charts, followed by Switch exclusive and Nintendo’s big fall releaseLuigi’s Mansion 3. This was the best first month debut for a game in theLuigi’s Mansionseries.
Modern Warfarejust might be the most talked aboutCall of Dutyin many years. With a polarizing campaign and multiplayer that fans are beginning to fall in love with, this game may have just breathed new life into an aging franchise. In January,ACall of DutyEsports leagueis inbound, meaning serious continued support should be coming to the game throughout 2020. Perhaps this means that for onceCall of Dutywill take a break from the annual cycle to commit to improving one game for over a year. On the other hand, new consoles are coming in 2020. From Activision’s perspective that is most certainly a good time to release a newCall of Dutygame.
