Summary
There has been a steady rise in the popularity of villainess mangas/manhwas within the last few years, as many readers of today find them to be quite relatable. Stepping into a fantasy world and abandoning the struggles of daily modern life for one of luxury is something any reader can dream of. The isekai genre (which is where characters transmigrate into various worlds) has been extremely popular for their interpretation of more elegant romances and magical systems that rule. This refreshing take has created a sub-genre of game-based worlds, where many modern characters transmigrate into eithertheir favourite otome gamesor survival games.
One classic villainess manhwa (Korean comics) that many readers can recognize is Villains Are Destined To Die by Gwon Gyeoeul. The premise follows the turbulent life of Penelope Eckhart as she’s trapped in an otome game, unable to make any changes to her life due to the strict rules of the system. We see her fail time and time again, often resorting to extreme measures just so that she can secure some sort of freedom and individuality. Like Penelope, there are many other mangas (Japanese comics) that take on a similar concept of ‘sticking to the plot’ and the various avenues each main character chooses to make sure they too can live a good life.

8The Newbie Princess Doesn’t Want A Game Over! Survive Through The Power of Simping
MAL Score: N/A
Princess Ceslia is the 3rd Princess of the Palakia Empire who has coined the nickname of “Barbarian Princess” due to her exiled lineage. Despised for striking white hair and red eyes, she has been uncared for since birth and is always looked down upon. Yet, one day after a failed poisoning attempt, she awakens memories of her life as a teenage gamer who passed away due to overplaying. She recalls her victorious career as a hardcore gamer and recognizes that the world she’s in is part of an MMORPG where she ruled as a Guildmaster. Ceslia soon then begins to realize her impending doom in 4 years and decides to manipulate her way to a higher position.
InThe Newbie Princess Doesn’t Want a Game Over! Survive Through the Power of Simping, Ceslia’s only option of survival is throughplaying the part of the naive & weak princessthat reaps all the benefits of her party. Unbeknownst to her, she comes from a longline of dark magicians due to her ‘barbarian’ blood, which makes her quite a force to be reckoned with despite the innocent, cutesy act she puts on. Due to her knowledge of her past life, Ceslia is quite the overpowered female lead, which makes for excellent suspense, drama and overall action as she climbs her way to the throne.

7I Was Summoned To Be A Saint, But Was Robbed Of The Position (Official)
MAL Score: 6.70
Anise Rogfor was summoned into the otome game world of “Garden of Salvation” alongside Hime, a girl who stole her title of “Saint”. After finding out she can also use a phenomenal amount of healing magic, Anise is banned to a remote village as this type of magic is only privy to the Saint. If the plot of the game continues as she remembers, the General from the neighboring kingdom will die and Hime will reign supreme as the Saint in the bad ending. This is bad news for Anise, as Hime has always been jealous of Anise, pulling various tricks to make sure she receives all the hate. Anise decides to finally outwit Hime, choosing to find the General, save him and secure a better future for herself.
The interesting twist inI Was Summoned To Be a Saint, But Was Robbed of The Positionis the originality of Anise’s character as the healer. She’s not the typical female lead that’s looking to sneakily fight against the game system and change the plotline whilst making sure minimal damage is done. Anise is ready to rain hell on the nation that wronged him and the people that want her killed, especially the royals and Hime. And what better way to do that than team up with the enemies and verify they decimate the kingdom that wronged her?

6The Villainess Falls For The Notorious Noble
MAL Score: 6.72
Eri Aikawa doesn’t have much luck on her side when she dies in a traffic accident whilst playing her favourite otome game. She reincarnates as Eris, the very doomed villainess, and in order to successfully avoid a bad end, she tries hard to change the plot. Unfortunately, fate has other plans, and she’s abandoned by her Crown Prince fiancée. In the midst of her getaway, she is also attacked by bandits, but is saved by the so-called dangerous fourth prince, Len Lysedstein.
Eris and Len are by farone of the most wholesome couplesin this sub-genre and their devotion to each other is portrayed well. Sadly, even as readers view their relationship progress and grow smoothly, Eris is faced with many challenges. The game system inThe Villainess Falls For The Notorious Noblehas gone against her multiple times, and she’s been put into dangerous situations as such. However, Eris is a villainess who doesn’t try too hard and sticks to her original personality of Eri Aikawa, which provides a refreshing outlook on this stiff noble world. She stands up for herself, physically fights back, is independent and knows how to act like a noble when she needs to.

5Villainess Level 99: I May Be The Hidden Boss But I’m Not The Demon Lord
MAL Score: 7.25
Being reincarnated as the Villainess Eumellia Dolkness from her favourite RPG Otome game isn’t as great as it seems when she finds out the tragic hidden end waiting for her. Shunned for her dark hair and black eyes, Eumellia is treated as a child of the Demon Lord and has no friends. She decides to use her knowledge from her past life and raise her level by clearing dungeons every day until she leaves for the Academy. Unfortunately, now at Level 99 (the highest possible level), she has caught the unwanted attention of many students and ‘capture targets’ (from the original game) that she wishes would ignore her.
The enjoyable factor inVillainess Level 99: I May Be The Hidden Boss But I’m Not The Demon Lord, is how overpowered Eumellia is. Many fans of manga will realize that a lot of overpowered (OP) characters mainly exist in shounen or action manga, so it’s extremely refreshing to see afemale main character wield the same archetype. Eumellia wields the strongest type of magic, has amazing physical abilities and, most of all, wants nothing to do with the people around her. Yet, as she spends more time with them, interestingly enough, she grows attached and sees merit in relationships she has shunned her whole life.

4Cross-Dressing Villainess Cecilia Sylvie
MAL Score: 6.88
At 5 years old, Cecelia Sylvie recalls her past life as Hiyono Kanzaki, a high schooler that usually spent her days off playing her favorite reverse harem dating game. Coincidentally, she recalls that the world she’s currently in is that very same game, and she’s none other than the scorned villainess that is doomed to die. Cecelia has a meltdown once she realizes that nothing she does stops the flow of the plot, so her only available plan is to move out of the spotlight. And the best way to do that isto dress up as a boy!
Cecelia’s main goal is to become a background NPC and just survive through all the potential endings that this otome game has. Unlike many other otome game based manga, inCross-Dressing Villainess Cecilia Sylvie, she tries her hardest to stop certain incidents from happening but always fails due to her own volition. There is a certain comedic aspect to the numerous times she has tried to get away from the Holy Maiden and keep her identity a secret, but always ends up in hilarious situations that will have readers cackling.

3In An Otome Game World, I’m A Villain?! I Can’t Accept This!
MAL Score: 6.33
Being reincarnated as Cecelia de Heintz is a walk in the park for Mariko Kanzaki. Even though she’s the doomed villainess of her favourite otome game, she has made sure to live a quiet life and focus on staying away from Prince Kaiser. But the minute she meets him, she piques his attention, and he wants no one else but her!
In An Otome Game World, I’m A Villain?! I Can’t Accept This!blends the cliché trope of the pining prince and the hilarious endeavors of the villainess that tries to get away from him. The story is pretty fast-paced in comparison to previous villainess manga and will really appeal to readers who enjoy a cliché romance story. Because no matter how hard Cecelia tries to set the Prince up with the heroine, all his attention is on her, and she can’t help but wonder if the game has made her the heroine of the story instead.

2Reborn Into A World Of Yanderes?!
MAL Score: 6.58
Lycoris Radiata unlocks her memories of a past life one evening and remembers her demise as a side character in a famous game she played. She only remembers that thelove interests are all yanderesand as she meets each one, then only does she recall various plot points in the story. Her fiancé, Wolfgang Eisenhut, was known to be the most dangerous of all the love interests and the only one who kills her in the original story. Wolfgang, unfortunately, has the most tragic story in the game and as Lycoris spends more time with him, she tries her best to verify he grows up happy and not traumatized.
Reborn Into A World Of Yanderes?!is a little more fast-paced than most of the stories on this list. Each significant event that Lycoris encounters is solved pretty early on, with only a few snags in the plotline and her relationships with each of the love interests are quite transparent. Most of the characters are pretty mature for their age, which leaves no room for any unnecessary drama and communication problems.

The first time Eleanor Lanchester heard someone’s inner voice, it was her mother’s harsh words behind her kind smile. She’s seen as nothing but a tool for political connections by her parents andan object of sexual gratificationby other males. Because Eleanor has the ability to hear people’s inner voices, she has no hope or trust in the people around her as all they want to do is use her beauty and look for their own benefit. However, at a ball one day, she ends up meeting Prince Asher, the first prince of the Kingdom, who seems to be a sweetheart inside, even though he keeps a calm expression.
Though Eleanor is the supposed villainess in the original story before she is reincarnated,The Villainess Who Can Read Minds Is Playing With Her Puppy-Like Prince Today Too,takes a place with a cliché outlook where the female lead is actually completely different to the original, and the original heroine plays the role of the jealous villainess. This is quite a common trope, yet in this plot, as Eleanor does not think much of sticking to any sort of storyline, she is unfortunately forced into situations because of the Heroine’s cunning personality and not the game system. The story is still quite exciting, since much of the drama is interesting enough that it makes it difficult to put down.
