After over a decade of waiting,Avatarfans have finally received some good news. As part of CinemaCon, which is being held in Las Vegas, Disney has unveiled the first official trailer for the much-awaited sequel in the franchise and even revealed the film’s official title. Now known asAvatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron’s next mega venture arrives in theaters on December 16.

It was already known that Cameron is working on four sequels toAvatar, which was first released in 2009, and Producer Jon Landau has confirmed that each project will focus on the Sully family. “Each story will be a standalone and each will come to its own conclusion,” he said at CinemaCon. The purpose, however, is to create a “larger epic saga.” Only time will tell if theAvatarfilms will be able to live up to fan expectations.

Even though the official trailer was for exhibition attendees’ eyes online, fans will be able to watch it pretty soon. It was confirmed during CinemaCon that theAvatar: The Way of Watertrailerwill play exclusively in theaters with Marvel Studio’sDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which premieres on May 6. The trailer will also be posted online a week after for the world to see. Some details from the trailer have emerged, andDeadlinereports that it focuses on Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully living with his family on the planet of Pandora. After “a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started,” Sully must unite forces with the Na’vi race to ensure Pandora’s safety.

Apart fromAvatar: The Way of Water, the Disney panel at CinemaCon also highlightedBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever.Black Pantheris recognized as one of the best origin stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, after lead actorChadwick Boseman’s tragic death, the team struggled to bring the sequel to fruition without him. It is still unknown what direction the story will go in, but it seems to be sticking with the world of Wakanda and its people, and how they move on without their King T’Challa.

As part of the event, Disney showcased a sizzle reel that featured the first official footage fromBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever.Fandango’s Erik Davis tweeted some details of the footage and specifically mentioned a scene featuring Letitia Wright’s Shuri,Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia, and Danai Gurira’s Okoye on the front lines of a battle. With T’Challa gone, it seems like the female characters will be taking charge and leading their people to victory. While theBlack Panthersequel is expected to release on July 20, 2025, there is no confirmation on whether a trailer will be arriving any time soon.
