Now that the final major DLC has dropped forAssassin’s Creed Odyssey, many may consider it the end of the epic. Yet, while Alexios and Kassandra’s story may have come to a close, theAssassin’s Creedfranchise is far from dead, thanks in part, to the revitalization of the franchise brought on by the last two entries. Ubisoft confirmed that there wouldn’t be anotherAssassin’s Creedrelease in 2019, taking another gap year as it did withAssassin’s Creed: Origins.

Notably, this move away from anannualization cyclewas another step in the right direction for the franchise, as it helped break the franchise fatigue tremendously, but now, many fans are likely ready to see what Ubisoft offers up afterAssassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Little is currently known about the nextAssassin’s Creed, but here is everything we do know.

Location

Time period and location are often major factors forAssassin’s Creedfans, with many wanting to know where the next game is taking place. There have been three major rumors take root as of late, which we’ve listed here in order from least likely to most likely.

China —This rumor pops up often, so it should have been no surprise when it reared its head again. This time, theAssassin’s Creedchina rumorscame as a result of an interview with Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, where a mistranslation seemingly confirmed a China location. However, since then, Guillemot has put those rumors to rest.

Rome— This is an interesting rumor simply because theAssassin’s Creedfranchise has been so involved with Rome in the past. It claims that the game will now be set during the Roman Empire under Marcus Aurelius sometime around 193 AD. The game would reportedly feature mainland Italy, as well as Gaul and Germania, with it being in development under the titleAssassin’s Creed Legion. There has been no information proving this rumor one way or the other.

Great Britain—The seemingly likeliest rumor is that it will take place primarily in the Baltic sea and the areas surrounding Great Britain.Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok, as it has been dubbed, reportedly takes place during the era of the viking. Some fakeAssassin’s Creedscreenshotsfor the leak came up once, but they were quickly put dead to rights. However, they do not stain the trustworthiness of the leak, as Kotaku’s Jason Schreier reported that his contact had also confirmed this location.

Assassin and Story

There’s even less information concerning the story of the game or who players will be taking the role of, but there’s info out there, depending on the leak. Concerning theRoman Empire leak, theAssassin’s Creed Legionwill focus on politics of the time period, as well as a deep delve into artifacts of the First Civilization. Players would also have the choice of either Cassius or Lucia, but if this sounds familiar, that’s because it’s practically the plot ofAssassin’s Creed Odyssey.

TheAssassin’s Creed Ragnarokleakpurports that naval combat and raiding would be key, as is the Viking way, but also adds that players would be the companion of Ragnar Lodbrok, a famed Viking raider who commonly raided Francia and Ango-Saxon England during the 9th century.

Regardless of how the past story works out, the modern-day will see the return of Layla Hassan, who was last seen facing off with the Templar Otso Berg shortly after becoming the Heir of Memories.

When Will We Know More?

Many hoped Ubisoft would provide a tease at E3 2019, yet theAssassin’s Creedfranchise was notably absent, making it one of the12 big missing gamesfrom the event. However, it’s worth mentioning that neitherAssassin’s Creed OriginsorAssassin’s Creed Odysseyappeared at an E3 event prior to the year of its release. In 2017,Assassin’s Creed Originswas revealed in May, with the setting and more revealed at E3 2017. ForAssassin’s Creed Odyssey, it was incredibly similar, with the game first officially appearing at E3 2018.

What this means is that we likely hear official information concerningAssasin’s Creed2020 at next year’s E3 event, and we wouldn’t expect anything solid before then. Leaks may precede the event, but as shown above, there are always rumors and leaks concerningAssassin’s Creed.

Release Date

The past twoAssassin’s Creedgames suggest a pattern, which includes an E3 announcement and reveal, with a release date following soon after. That doesn’t mean there can’t be a shake-up, but we wouldn’t hold our breath for an early 2020 release either.Assassin’s Creed OriginsandAssassin’s Creed Odysseyboth released in October, the 27th and 5th, respectively. Therefore, it stands to reason thatAssassin’s Creed 2020will likely launch in October 2020.
