After leaks revealed that Ursaluna would potentially be receiving an all-new “Blood Moon” form as part ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s upcoming DLC, there could be other Pokemon in line who could also benefit from a similarly inspired Moon-based gimmick. Though the specifics about Ursaluna’s new form are still awaiting confirmation from Game Freak, but were leaked by a reliable source,The Teal Mask’s leaked DLC Pokedexseems to liken this Blood Moon form to Gen 6’s Ash-Greninja as it won’t be obtainable via traditional evolution. As such, this could suggest that Blood Moon Ursaluna is on par with other event Pokemon within the bigger picture ofScarletandViolet’s DLC.

However, there are many other Pokemon with ties to the Moon beyond the Teddiursa line, meaning that Game Freak shouldn’t miss its chance to push the envelope beyondPokemon ScarletandViolet. In doing so, several existing Pokemon could have the opportunity to revamp how they look and play without the need to introduce new evolutions or as regional variants thanks to Blood Moon forms. By following the same outline as Blood Moon Ursaluna which explains away its transformation as a result of strange forces, Game Freak could secure itself a new and arguably simpler way of reinventing older Pokemon.

Possible Other Pokemon for Blood Moon Forms

Much like Ursaluna, there are several other Pokemon that either have connections to or designs based on the Moon itself like Clefairy and Lunatone. Given the long-standingmystery around Clefairy’s relationship with the Moon, it is arguably the most deserving of a new Blood Moon form in order to add a new layer to the Pokemon’s lore much like Ursaluna. Additionally, as a single stage and part Psychic-type Pokemon, Lunatone could also benefit from a Blood Moon form due to its own special powers like Ursaluna, though Solrock may then also need a new form to keep the Gen 3 duo balanced.

The recent leak of Ursaluna’s Blood Moon form has, however, also been closely compared to therarer Dusk form of Lycanroc’s split evolutions. As the leaks outlined, Blood Moon Ursaluna would be different from Dusk Lycanroc as its form wouldn’t be a natural evolution, but Lycanroc’s own connections to the time of day make it another ideal candidate for its own Blood Moon form. Though it could be introduced as a fourth new evolution that leans closer to Midnight Lycanroc’s design, it could also be added as a new form exclusive to Midnight Lycanroc through an ability akin to Rockruff’s Own Tempo and Ursaluna.

Potential Blood Moon Forms for Legendary and Mythical Pokemon

While Game Freak could introduce additional Blood Moon forms for various other standard Pokemon, there could be an even bigger opportunity to extend this new concept to include Legendary and Mythical Pokemon too. Pokemon such as Lunatone, Clefairy, and many more aren’t the only ones with connections to the Moon or a day-night cycle, as there are prominent examples like Lunala. Though both it and Solgaleo received their fair share of additional forms as part ofPokemon Ultra SunandUltra Moon, Lunala could receive a unique Blood Moon form to break with tradition just asPokemon XD: Gale of Darknessdid with Shadow Lugia.

But beyond the likes of Lunala, a Blood Moon form might be better suited to Legendary and Mythical Pokemon that aren’t the faces of their respective games. Therefore, Pokemon like Cresselia or even Darkrai who are closely associated with the Moon and nighttime might benefit more from a Blood Moon form, especially when both haven’t been as widely utilized inprevious games or DLC storylines likePokemon Legends: Arceus. Cresselia in particular as the Lunar Pokemon could have its lore expanded by a Blood Moon form as a new dimension for its relationship with Darkrai such as giving it a new type to reflect its transformation.
