Activision responds to the negative reaction and huge number of YouTube dislikes fans have given the debut trailer forCall of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
Earlier this week, Activision unveiled the newest entry in theCall of Dutyfranchise,Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, developed by Infinity Ward. Soon after the it was released on YouTube, thetrailer began racking up dislikes, becoming one of the most disliked videos on YouTube.
Judging by the comments on the trailer, all the negative reaction toInfinite Warfareis coming from the fact that the game takes place in a far-future setting, which includes environments inspace and other planets. Today, Activision responded to those adverse reactions.
On an earnings call Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg tried to be positive when asked about all the hate being thrown at the latestCall of Duty:
First of all, you gotta love the passion of gamers. This is an industry like no other and a fan base like no other. We love that our fans treat this franchise like their own and have such strong points of view about it. There just aren’t many entertainment franchises on earth that can generate the kind of passion that Call of Duty can… and that’s a good thing.
Hirshberg said he understood fans reaction and desire to have a more traditional, modern-era Call of Duty, which he said is exactly why Activision will beofferingModern Warfare Remasteredthis yearalongsideInfinite Warfare.
Secondly, of course, we know there are people in our community who are nostalgic for the boots on the ground-style gameplay; that’s why we madeModern Warfare Remastered. But we also have millions of people in our community who want to have new innovative experiences in the game each year andInfinite Warfareis going to deliver that. The good news is this year we found a way to deliver both in one package while keeping our community together.
He went onto say that this isn’t the first time fans have had this kind of reaction; there was a similar outcry of disapproval whenthe very popularBlack Ops 2entry in the series debuted:
We’ve seen this in the franchise before. The reveal trailer forBlack Ops 2,which took the franchise into the future for the first time, had the most dislikes of any reveal trailer we had ever made at that time. And that went on to become our most successful game ever.
Activision is reporting that “pre-orders are off to a very strong start” for the game and that there are a unprecedented number of likes onInfinite Warfare’s YouTube trailer as well, “the highest we’ve ever seen,” according to Hirshberg.
There’s no doubt much more to be seen of Infinite Warfare, especially with E3 coming up next month. Check outeverything we know so far aboutInfinite Warfare, and how Infinity Ward’s latestcould breathe new life into the franchise.
